Abstract

To make distinguishable and recognizable architectural additions is one of the established principles officially recognized as guidelines for the restoration works. The coexistence between preexisting buildings and new bodies is a form of modification inherent in the natural metamorphosis process of architecture that is called to update itself in order to be preserved and renewed over time. But the topic of making distinguishable and recognizable architectural additions with respect to the preexisting buildings to which in fact are added, represents a starting point of reflection to investigate the possible variations of such coexistence compositional mechanism. Through an updated hybridization process, in fact, the topic of the addition became involved in a dense panorama of contemporary creations through which it was deepened and declined to identify, within a middle ground between restoration and design, a profitable thematic area of experimentation. The contribution investigates the ways in which this theme took shape in the recent regeneration and reuse project of a modern ruin processed by the Dutch firm OMA, aimed at developing new spaces for contemporary art. The project for the Prada Foundation in Milan operated the recycling of buildings that made up a gin distillery (1910) through the interaction between existing fragments and a new range of architectural grafts.
