Abstract

The young Octavian’s choice of displaying himself on Rome’s scene as divi filius has to be considered like a conscious political strategy. The link with the divinized Caesar allows to adopt Hellenistic patterns, aiming at establishing a steady power and kingship. In this framework, the model of the divi filius is related to the Hellenistic idea of the “deus praesens” as well as to the acquisition of isotheoi timai. The military victory is the new pillar of Hellenistic power: victory has to be turned into political power and in this perspective the idea of the divi filius becomes a key point.
