During the twentieth century, research about typological and technological development of housing (from minimal dimensions to energy comfort) has neglected, except for some examples, the relationship between the housing function and the space outside it. The present study aims to highlight the need to recover this relationship by inheriting the close link, present in the constructive culture of the past, between living comfort and environmental one outside the dwelling. The present evaluation model is meant to highlight the role of urban form in the determination of the heat island phenomenon, by comparing two urban areas of the city of Cava de’ Tirreni (Salerno), homogeneous for extrinsic (altimetric, climatic, environmental, etc.) characteristics, but different for intrinsic ones (realization epoch, typological and formal aspects, constructive techniques and materials, etc.). The response assessment of the two study cases, in terms of environmental thermal comfort, was carried out basing on a multi-criteria analysis, on a neighborhood scale, which is an intermediate level between the urban scale and the individual building one. Specifically, this study analyzes the yield with respect to environmental and morphological parameters (solar capture, generation of gray areas, index of the agglomeration compactness, presence of green areas, land cover ratio, properties of urban materials), in order to draw up critical maps of the territory, as a knowledge base for future territorial choices, in order to reduce the urban heat island phenomenon.
