During the twentieth century, research into the typological and technological development of housing (from the minimum dimension to energy comfort) has, except for a few examples, left out the relationship between the dwelling and the external space. The present study aims to be a contribution towards the sensitization to the recovery of the relationship between the internal living space and the external space, through the legacy of the constructive culture of the past, which has paid particular attention to the conditions of human wellbeing, both interior of their accommodation both outside of it. The experimented model therefore aims to frame the role of urban form in the determination of the phenomenon of heat islands, even in small urban centers, making a comparison between two urban agglomerations of the city of Cava de’ Tirreni (Salerno), homogeneous altimetrically, but opposed by age, technology, form and characterization. The response of the two case studies, in terms of environmental thermal comfort, was then evaluated through an analysis at the district level, at an intermediate scale between the individual building and the city. The study analyzes the performance with respect to environmental and morphological parameters (solar uptake, shadow generation, compactness index, green structure, coverage ratio, properties of urban materials) for the preparation of criticality maps of the territory, which can represent a knowledge base for future territorial choices.
