The stories about Miletus foundation and the ancient tradition about the stasis of the sixth century seem to preserve – or create and exploit – the memory of a role played by ethnicity in these events and show the existence of a relationship of these ethnic dynamics with the settlement of the various elements in the city or in the territory, where was located the pre-Greek oracular sanctuary, the Didymaion. The founding hero is likely to participate in this dynamic. This contribution aims to study: (1.) through the founding hero Neleus the representation of (a.) the ethnic Community identity and (b.) the territory occupation from the emic point of view of the Ionians of Miletus; (2.) how it is instead considered by the ethical perspective of other elements of the city; (3.) the hero’s role in the self-affirming regional identity of the Ionians who meet in the Panionion around Poseidon in Mycale.

Abstract
The stories about Miletus foundation and the ancient tradition about the stasis of the sixth century seem to preserve – or create and exploit – the memory of a role played by ethnicity in these events and show the existence of a relationship of these ethnic dynamics with the settlement of the various elements in the city or in the territory, where was located the pre-Greek oracular sanctuary, the Didymaion. The founding hero is likely to participate in this dynamic. This contribution aims to study: (1.) through the founding hero Neleus the representation of (a.) the ethnic Community identity and (b.) the territory occupation from the emic point of view of the Ionians of Miletus; (2.) how it is instead considered by the ethical perspective of other elements of the city; (3.) the hero’s role in the self-affirming regional identity of the Ionians who meet in the Panionion around Poseidon in Mycale.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
