Using the emotional competence construct, defined by Saarni (1999) as the set of skills which allow maintaining or changing transactions with the environment in an effective and socially appropriate manner, we will try to explore the role of specific skills in identity development, with a special attention to the need to understand the process of identity formation in terms of interdependence between the person and his/her reference context. This study offers a few reflections on the importance of rejection sensitivity, a cognitive and affective disposition to defensively expect, perceive and overreact to signs of rejection by others, through an in-depth exploration of relational and emotional factors in the online and offline contexts. It is worth investigating how these considerations may be translated into a model of intervention in the adolescent area that favors a reflection on rejection sensitivity in the school context.
