This chapter investigates the rich heritage of marble objects inside the Venetian church of San Giacomo dall’Orio, notable for its wealth of polychrome artefacts: from the holy water stoup in precious Anatolian cipollino marble to the monolithic column in verde antico, not to mention the octagonal pulpit inlaid with coloured geometrical compartments. Thanks to documentation discovered in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, it is possible here for the first time to determine what works of restoration and conservation were carried out in the church in the early years of the twentieth century, including the despoliation of two statues from the interior, here attributed to Heinrich Myering, which since 1911 have stood on the façade of the church of San Giuseppe at Chies d’Alpago. This new information has helped to elucidate the stratification of the stone elements and their influence in the wider cultural context of the lagoon, which even led to their mention in Gabriele d’Annunzio’s novel Il Fuoco.

Abstract
This new information has helped to elucidate the stratification of the stone elements and their influence in the wider cultural context of the lagoon, which even led to their mention in Gabriele d’Annunzio’s novel Il Fuoco.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
