The contribution analyzes the attraction and opposition relationship between fashion and stage dress during the sixteenth centuries, in order to identify the perfecting of theatrical costume design as a conscious artistic language. The reflection focuses mainly on the dialectic between verisimilitude and otherness of the costume compared to the epoque fashion taking as examples some famous mis-en-scene in the spectacular genres of intermezzi, ballet, comedy, classical tragedy and commedia dell'arte.
