Abstract

As is well known, in Ostia everyday life was strongly guided by the trades, so much that G. Girri in her survey counted more than 800 tabernae. They are the archaeological reflection of the expansion of the middle and middle-lower classes in imperial Roman society, in which framework Ostia completes the Pompeian documentation providing data on the mid-and late imperial phases, thanks to the evidence of the walls. The Ostia’s tabernae survey was recently the subject of a new revitalization and fits into the wider context of a research aimed to the reconstruction of social behavior which rotate around the retail business in the Roman city, that was developed on the basis of the recent acquisitions in the Pompeian field. Specifically, through the intersection of the data related to architectural and structural parameters, in this paper I will investigate the path of the inside development of the taberna and its relationship with the city, attempting to verify or not the existence of recurring and paradigmatic features.
