This paper discusses the effects of saturation of power inductors and their thermal stability. The investigation is focused on DC-DC switching regulators, with emphasis on fixed frequency controls. A small-change model is formulated for the assessment of power inductors thermal stability, based on analytical models of saturation and losses. The stability analysis of different commercial inductors in a 60 V / 3.3 V-2 A buck regulator is eventually presented and discussed.

Abstract
