Just like Collé’s La Partie de chasse, Sedaine’s Le Roi et le fermier is a French rewriting of an English drama by Dodsley, The King and the Miller of Mansfield (1736). Dodsley’s play, translated into French in 1736, is inspired by a popular song and based on a Spanish play, El sabio en su retiro y el villano en su rincón (1670) by Juan de Matos Fragoso, translated into French in the early 1770’s. Considering Dodsley’s mediation, this article analyses the Spanish reception of the French plays with respect to the aesthetical debate opposing French and Spanish theatrical models.
