In this chapter, the crisis of classical physics and the early steps of quantum mechanics are evidenced by means of a thorough study of the laws of radiant heat. The experimental findings of the latest part of the 19th century and of the beginning of the 20th century on the thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of black bodies are recalled. Planck’s early attempt to explain the observed phenomena is reviewed and the way Planck’s formula can be used to justify the Stefan-Boltzmann and Wien’s laws is analyzed. Moreover, simple exercises are also proposed.

Abstract
In this chapter, the crisis of classical physics and the early steps of quantum mechanics are evidenced by means of a thorough study of the laws of radiant heat. The experimental findings of the latest part of the 19th century and of the beginning of the 20th century on the thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of black bodies are recalled. Planck’s early attempt to explain the observed phenomena is reviewed and the way Planck’s formula can be used to justify the Stefan-Boltzmann and Wien’s laws is analyzed. Moreover, simple exercises are also proposed.File in questo prodotto:
