Within the rich and eclectic architectural production of Pier Luigi Nervi, a significant part is related to the buildings for industrial production which may well represent the evolution of his ideas, method, and construction research. Between 1930 and 1960, Nervi had numerous opportunities to experiment with industrial construction, often on behalf of the Autonomous Administration of State Monopolies. Among such industrial typologies, the tobacco factory mediates between the farm work and the large modern production plants. This paper intends to investigate Pier Luigi Nervi’s interventions in the tobacco factories in Naples, Scafati, San Giorgio del Sannio and Benevento, trying to study his actual contribution to each of these complexes, through the interpretation of the precious archival documents and the evidence that has survived the passage of time and human neglect.
