Archeologie a confronto. L’ex stabilimento Cirio a Paestum e la complessità del paesaggio urbano

The former Cirio factory in Paestum was built starting from 1907 in Santa Venera, close to the walls of ancient Poseidonia, and is an example of industrial archeology of the twentieth century. The Universities of Perugia and Michigan conducted several excavation campaigns that revealed the structures of the Sanctuary dedicated to Aphrodite-Venus, on which a large portion of the factory still stands today. The building is now a typical industrial ruin. The paper investigates the unusual case of two different archeologies coexisting in the same location, classical and industrial, by exploring the landscape and its distinctive features. The landscape of Paestum has evolved as a result of both natural and human activity. This, not always happy, coexistence serves as a guideline for the proper management and protection of an archaeological, rural, and industrial landscape.
