In 1906 Margarita Sabashnikova (1882, Moscow — 1973, Stuttgart) thought about doing a unique kind of book-album: portraits of Vyacheslav Ivanov, K. Somov, K. Balmont, M. Kuzmin, Andrei Bely, L. Bakst, A. Remizov and S. Gorodetsky, and of Sabashnikova herself. The images were to be accompanied by selected verses of these poets and M. Voloshin’s essays dedicated to them. This project was in line with the theory and practice of the synthesis of the arts, of a dialogue of word and pictorial image. Sabashnikova planned a similar project in the late 1910’s - a book album with portraits of Vyach. Ivanov, N. Berdyaev, P. Muratov, B. Zaitsev that would be accompanied by records of conversations with them. The only surviving print from this unfinished project is published here — the portrait of Vyach. Ivanov.
