Sviluppo della tecnica idraulica nel Regno di Napoli nel XIX secolo

The establishment in Naples of the Application School, during the so called “French period”, shaped on the example of the French École d’Application des Ponts et Chaussées, signed an important step forward the development of the modern engineering knowledge in the Kingdom of Naples. An incubation period of about 20 years was needed before approaches and methods taught into the School could be accepted into the Neapolitan technical community and became fruitful. The present work intends to investigate the development in the fi eld of the hydraulic engineering following the developments of three projects: the restoration of the Fucino emissary, the construction of a canal linking the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian and the reclamation of the low Volturno valley. These examples show that about 20 years were required before the modern hydraulic engineering approaches substituted the old approach based on the mere reference to classical texts
