This essay intends to trace a profile of the legal condition of women in the Modern Age in Southern Italy. Starting from the considerations on decorum reported in Legalis Androgynus, a seventeenth-century work specifically on the subject; and through the examination of legislation and the pronouncements of contemporary jurisprudence, the paper intends to restore a cross-section of female ‘privileges’ with regard to institutions such as sponsalia and relative impediments, donationes propter nuptias and hereditary successions.
