Identità, genealogia e autorappresentazione delle élites nobiliari di età moderna: le “storie” del lignaggio Acquaviva

The stories of the aristocratic lineages of the modern age reveal the interweaving between intellectuals and power: the former put their expertise at the service of the elites who, in turn, offer for intellectuals the opportunity to acquire fame and fortune thanks to influential patrons who intend to glorify their lineage. The genealogical production that, between criticism and resistance, tries to gain credit as a historiographical genre, knows a vast diffusion in the modern age and provides the aristocracy with a valid celebratory tool in which noblemen and familiar events are exalted, omitted or manipulated according to the image that the family intends to give of itself. The case of the Acquaviva d’Aragona memoirs is emblematic of the role assigned to the reconstruction of the events, commissioned by leading members of the family intent on accrediting themselves as leaders of the lineage and guarantors of its self-representation. This production aims to establish the identity and the symbolic heritage of the lineage. The “stories” of the Acquavivas reveal the intention of concealing the internal discords of the branches of the family with the aim of magnifying its virtues and strengthening its power, highlighting the unity, value and antiquity of the lineage, which cohesively claims its merits and its loyalty to the sovereign.

Le storie dei lignaggi aristocratici di età moderna rivelano l’intreccio tra gli intellettuali e il potere: i primi mettono la propria competenza al servizio delle élites che, a loro volta, offrono agli intellettuali l’opportunità di acquisire fama e fortuna grazie a influenti mecenati desiderosi di glorificare la propria stirpe. Il legame tra storia e politica, tra recupero selettivo della memoria e gestione del potere, diviene sempre più stretto. La produzione genealogica che, tra critiche e resistenze, tenta di accreditarsi come genere storiografico, conosce una vasta fioritura in età moderna e fornisce all’aristocrazia un valido strumento celebrativo in cui personaggi ed eventi familiari vengono esaltati, omessi o manipolati in funzione dell’immagine che il casato intende dare di sé. Il caso delle memorie degli Acquaviva d’Aragona è emblematico del ruolo assegnato alla ricostruzione delle vicende del casato, commissionata da esponenti di spicco della famiglia all’acme della loro ascesa, intenzionati ad accreditarsi come leader della stirpe e garanti della sua autorappresentazione. Questa produzione è imperniata su figure e gesta destinate a fondare l’identità del lignaggio, il patrimonio simbolico alla base del suo prestigio. Le “storie” degli Acquaviva rivelano l’intento di celare le discordie interne ai rami del casato con l’obiettivo di magnificare le sue virtù e rafforzare il suo potere: la scelta narrativa privilegia l’ottica della compattezza, del valore e dell’antichità del lignaggio, che rivendica coeso i suoi meriti e la sua fedeltà al sovrano.
