This paper adopts a contrastive, corpus-based and functional per-spective, although it takes into account the formal description of the structure as a point of departure. Therefore, after the description of the formal properties of the structure, I analyse real occurrences of Italian and English FCs. The data for the analysis has been collected from Ital-ian and English philosophical essays and assembled into a corpus of 200’000 words, named ICOCP-Phil-Corpus. The aim of the analysis is twofold. Firstly, I provide a syntactic definition of FC that could be valid for both Italian and English, and operational for the corpus-based search. Secondly, I propose a first investigation of the textual functions of FC, with a special focus on the relation between the fronted constitu-ent of the structure and its discursive antecedents in the text.

Abstract
Secondly, I propose a first investigation of the textual functions of FC, with a special focus on the relation between the fronted constitu-ent of the structure and its discursive antecedents in the text.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
