The purpose of this paper is to explore students’ perceptions with respect to the entrepreneurship competence they develop during their curricular path at the University of Salerno, in Italy. We submitted an online questionnaire to 190 students to identify the skills they consider to be important for entrepreneurial behaviour. Our findings reveal that the competence students seek more than any other is learning by doing: they demand both theoretical and practical training that assigns greater value to the internship experience. Monitoring and evaluating engagement in entrepreneurship education programmes calls for greater investments and new policies by universities.
