One of the features that distinguishes Ukrainian from other Eastern Slavic languages, in particular from Russian, is the lexicon. This is characterized by the active use of a significant component of Romance, Germanic and West Slavic origin. In this article, we primarily intend to present a short overview of the Romance lexical element in Ukrainian. This is the result of language contacts that occurred in different phases of the historical development of this language. At the present stage of research we are not yet able to determine the exact quantity of Romance lexemes in Ukrainian and to compare it with Russian and Belarusian. The study also aims to create the premises for further research on the Ukrainian alloglot lexis with the goal of establishing a typology of Ukrainian based on lexical criteria.
