This review deals with the technologies usually adopted for the treatment and reuse of grey water. Collected from baths, showers, and hand washbasins, grey water appears less polluting than domestic sewage and potentially usable locally for nonpotable purposes such as toilet flushing. By means of numerous case studies, grey water characteristics, treatment and reuse technologies, main process parameters, and performance in terms of macropollutants removals are explored. Moreover, cases concerning technologies tested for the removal of micropollutants are presented. The results of the review may be useful for the selection of the most suitable technologies for a given application.

Abstract

This review deals with the technologies usually adopted for the treatment and reuse of grey water. Collected from baths, showers, and hand washbasins, grey water appears less polluting than domestic sewage and potentially usable locally for nonpotable purposes such as toilet flushing. By means of numerous case studies, grey water characteristics, treatment and reuse technologies, main process parameters, and performance in terms of macropollutants removals are explored. Moreover, cases concerning technologies tested for the removal of micropollutants are presented. The results of the review may be useful for the selection of the most suitable technologies for a given application.
