Body Ostentation and Luxury Display: Communication Ways in the Archaic Polis. This paper deals, in the broad scope of the topic proposed for the Conference, with the theme of the importance the Greeks in the 6th century accorded to the body in communicating before an audience, a voiceless communication. It examines the collective behavior of a section of the city community that – with its footsteps, group clothing and hairstyle – communicates to itself and communicates to the beholder its position within the power dynamics of the polis and more particularly the societal structures. The choice of the religious moment particularly seals this type of communication in order to manifest the effect of inclusion/exclusion before the entire community gathered under the blessing of the deity.
