I siti reali campani, luoghi strategici del potere politico del regno borbonico, fanno da sfondo alle vicende salienti del secondo conflitto mondiale: occupate dalle truppe naziste, poi in fase di liberazione da parte degli alleati e sede, a Caserta, del trattato di pace nel 1945 che siglò la fine della guerra. Ingenti furono i danni a tale patrimonio, sia alle architetture che al sistema infrastrutturale di strade e ponti e diversi gli approcci al restauro e alla ricostruzione.
