The paper aims to evaluate the pressure of tourism on destinations/ localities by leveraging on estimation methods accepted in the literature. The unit of analysis is represented by 814 municipalities of South of Italy. Particularly, tourism pressure is measured through a set of indicators reliable at a municipal level and able to assess the cargo of tourism demand in each municipality. Moreover, again with a municipal detail, a tourism industries intensity rate is elaborated on the basis of a sample of companies. For this index the companies’ added value is used to identify the municipalities where the greatest tourism pressure is balanced by the wealth produced by local tourism. Findings provide an estimate of the geographic distribution of the tourism load among the municipalities in the Southern macro area, limited to the tourism load detected in terms of socio-anthropic pressure.
