The study concerns the iconographic program of the eye-cup of Exekias found in Vulci (Munich Antikensammlungen 8729): building on previous investigations, the aim of the work is to deepen the relationship between the images painted inside and outside the cup - the ship of Dionysus running on the wine-dark sea and the groups of hoplites fighting for the corpse of a fallen warrior. In particular, the significant value of the shield raised by a warrior in the fighting on the stripped corpse is focused on: it can be suggested that through this iconic key the image could evoke the same topic of the loss of the shield in battle, sung in archaic Greek sympotic poetry.

Abstract
The study concerns the iconographic program of the eye-cup of Exekias found in Vulci (Munich Antikensammlungen 8729): building on previous investigations, the aim of the work is to deepen the relationship between the images painted inside and outside the cup - the ship of Dionysus running on the wine-dark sea and the groups of hoplites fighting for the corpse of a fallen warrior. In particular, the significant value of the shield raised by a warrior in the fighting on the stripped corpse is focused on: it can be suggested that through this iconic key the image could evoke the same topic of the loss of the shield in battle, sung in archaic Greek sympotic poetry.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
