This contribution aims to review some conditions and visions of the Southern Apennines, to tracean evolutionary line within the different approaches, meanings and uses of the high lands, with particular reference tothe rhetoric of subalpine narrative. Specifically, some research hypotheses are suggested on the re-signification of thatdiscourse which started from the scientific explorations of the 19th century up to the flâneur-like, aesthetical modelsof walking. The oppositional visions of outdoor activities and their implications are discussed, since the economic andsocial functions of the mountains have been forsaken as leading roles.
