This paper explores the peculiar phenomenon of gold coinage in Crete during the late 4th and early 3rd centuries BC. While most Cretan mints produced primarily silver and bronze coins, a few cities (notably Gortyn, Knossos, Hyrtakina, Lisos, and Kydonia) struck limited and sporadic gold issues. These include both official coinages—often tied to military contexts or local confederacies—and pseudo-coins probably intended for funerary use. The study situates these rare emissions within the broader monetary and political landscape of Hellenistic Crete, shedding light on their function, typology, and likely motivations, such as war efforts or emergency payments.

Abstract
This paper explores the peculiar phenomenon of gold coinage in Crete during the late 4th and early 3rd centuries BC. While most Cretan mints produced primarily silver and bronze coins, a few cities (notably Gortyn, Knossos, Hyrtakina, Lisos, and Kydonia) struck limited and sporadic gold issues. These include both official coinages—often tied to military contexts or local confederacies—and pseudo-coins probably intended for funerary use. The study situates these rare emissions within the broader monetary and political landscape of Hellenistic Crete, shedding light on their function, typology, and likely motivations, such as war efforts or emergency payments.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
