This article examines cookbooks and recipes from the First World War from a sociolinguistic perspective. The aim is to explore the linguistic characteristics of these historical documents within the broader social and cultural context of the time, highlighting both linguistic phenomena and the impact of the war on food and society. The study focuses on the following key questions: How is the vocabulary shaped in response to food shortages and the use of substitute ingredients? To what extent do the cookbooks reflect the social, political, and cultural conditions of the First World War? Which linguistic means and communicative strategies are used to convey values such as frugality, a sense of duty, and self-restraint – and what do these reveal about the social function and ideological framing of the texts?
