Abstract

This work realize the first critical edition of the letter L of Papias Elementarium doctrinae rudimentum, the Latin lexicon most used in schools until the Humanistic age. The work lacks a complete edition, hampered above all by a recensio codicum that cannot yet be defined as exhaustive: compared to the recensio made by Georg Goetz in the early 1900s of 88 witnesses, and to the subsequent expansion to 110 exemplaria due to Geoffrey L. Bursill-Hall, with the studies completed by Violetta de Angelis and Filippo Bognini, has so far reached the acquisition of 122 complete manuscripts. Following the examination of the catalogues, then the exploration of the handwritten tradition, the candidate selected the 31 oldest, intact and non-fragmentary witnesses. The final paper consists of a first introductory section, in which, after the news about the author, his fortune in the following ages, and the state of the studies that involve the work in every aspect, follows the detailed presentation and analysis of the handwritten tradition, with an attached description of the individual collated witnesses; at the end, there is a chapter dedicated to the examination of the sources reworked by Papias, in which new scenarios are considered for any desirable, subsequent studies. In the second part of the paper, therefore, the critical text is presented, accompanied by the necessary apparatus (apparatus criticus; apparatus testimoniorum). [edited by Author]
