The dissertation focuses on the animal realm in the writings of Hipponax. It is broken down into four chapters, each of which examines the function of animals in popular beliefs, superstition and ceremonial magic; the man-beast metaphors and similes; the role of animals in erotic imagery; in zoologic lemmata, namely fragments consisting of a single word that corresponds to the name of an animal. The above-mentioned chapters are accompanied by three addendums. The first is an analysis of fragments with references to mythical beasts; the second looks into the role of animals in gastronomy; the third features the names of the hog in Hipponax’s writings.
