This thesis focuses on the political events of the two princely families of Benevento-Capua and Salerno in the period between 887, when Atenulf obtained the Capuan county, and 981, the year of death of prince Pandulf Ironhead. The work is divided into thematic sections, which are focused on the dynastic changes in the Lombard South Italy during the X century (the rise to power of Atenulf I, the ages of Landulf I, II and Pandulf Ironhead, the rule of the princes Guaimar I, II and Gisulf I), on the history of the two monasteries of Monte Cassino and S. Vincenzo al Volturno and on the evolution of the diocesan network of the Lombard area, up to the rise to archdioceses of Capua, Benevento and Salerno. In this thesis, ample space has been dedicated both to the exegesis of Greek texts (the hagiographies, the letters of the Constantinopolitan patriarchs, the literary production of the age of Constantine VII, the historiography of the XI-XII centuries) and to those in Latin, not only of southern Italy (annals and historiae, cartulary-chronicles, archival documents, papal privileges and letters, obituaries, as well as works of an apologetic or encomiastic nature). The research carried out on the events of Langobardia in the 10th century has made it possible to highlight the relationships existing between southern Italy and the other areas of the Mediterranean sea, but also to give the right space to some princes of Lombard age. Abstract
