This thesis provides an innovative framework, based on the risk assessment methodology, to support the design of a pioneering complex systems, strongly ICT based, whose failures could threaten people, environment and society so it is safety critical. Beyond the technical risks, the study identifies possible concerns of the society raised by the use of new technology (complementary measures) which have to be managed to guarantee a sustainable adoption. The framework is applied to a case study in the aviation domain. [edited by Author]
