The article focuses on the systematic framework of the sports phenomenon as it relates to persons with disabilities, in light of the main relevant legal sources. In particular, it analyzes the numerous classifications and categories present in the world of sports – both Olympic and Paralympic – paying specific attention to the reasons that justify their existence. Subsequently, it outlines the essential features of certain disputes that have arisen, both in Italy and abroad, from the application of these internal sports regulations. The aim of the investigation is to propose a methodological approach consistent with the relevant legal system – namely, the Italian-European framework – that allows for an appropriate and reasonable interpretation of the rules established by sports governing bodies, including in the Paralympic sector.
