One of the most interesting aspects of the so-called Porta Rosa at Velia is the presence of numerous letters and acronyms engraved on the stone blocks. These, as well as those engraved on other monuments of Velia, concern the organization of the quarry and construction work, but also the destination of the blocks for various construction sites. From an epigraphic perspective, they also provide valuable discussion points, both technically – relating to the architectural aspects of the monument and its building history – and paleographically, concerning the evolution of certain letter forms during the Hellenistic age.

Abstract
One of the most interesting aspects of the so-called Porta Rosa at Velia is the presence of numerous letters and acronyms engraved on the stone blocks. These, as well as those engraved on other monuments of Velia, concern the organization of the quarry and construction work, but also the destination of the blocks for various construction sites. From an epigraphic perspective, they also provide valuable discussion points, both technically – relating to the architectural aspects of the monument and its building history – and paleographically, concerning the evolution of certain letter forms during the Hellenistic age.File in questo prodotto:
