The voice and its technological mediation, throughout John Lennon’s career, are crucial points of intersection between the expressive and psychological tensions embodied by the artist. Although contemplated among the greatest singers in popular music history, he is characterized by an irreconcilable idiosyncrasy towards his own voice, which ends up stimulating new practices destined to become standards for record productions to come. Since 1966 in particular, the interaction between Lennon as performer, the recording technology and the professional agents working with him in the studio contributes to emancipate the recording artifact from the hitherto dominant liveness. By interweaving the analysis of recorded tracks and the sources relating to their production, this research aims to contextualize a model of voice mediation, its psychological and semantic qualities, and the underlying systems model of creativity.
