Pansharpening

Pansharpening is the process of using a high-resolution panchromatic image to enhance the spatial resolution of a multispectral image acquired over the same area. This technique allows high-quality multispectral images to be obtained, while significantly reducing the requirements placed on both the onboard imaging systems and the resources needed for data storage, processing, and transmission. This chapter provides an overview of the various methodologies developed over the years, covering both traditional image processing methods and more recent approaches based on neural networks. To support understanding, two numerical implementation examples are presented. These are designed to help readers grasp the core fusion process behind pansharpening and offer ready-to-use tools for processing real satellite images.
