ABSTRACT THIS THESIS EXPLORES THE ARTISTIC CAREER AND CREATIVE THOUGHT OF WANG SHUPING (BORN 1966), ONE OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE FEMALE ARTISTS IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA. HER WORK IS EXAMINED WITHIN THE BROADER SOCIAL AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS THAT HAVE SHAPED CHINA FROM DENG XIAOPING’S REFORM ERA (1978–1996) TO XI JINPING’S “BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE” (一带一路, YĪ DÀI YĪ LÙ). WITHIN THIS CONTEXT, THE STUDY INVESTIGATES THE SYMBOLIC AND CONCEPTUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FEMALE IMAGE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART. THE RESEARCH PURSUES TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES: FIRST, TO SITUATE WANG SHUPING’S ARTISTIC STYLE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART AND ITS DIALOGUE WITH THE WEST, ANALYZING BOTH HER INFLUENCES AND HER UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS; SECOND, TO EXPLORE HER TRANSITION FROM THE FIELDS OF FASHION AND DESIGN TO FINE ART, HIGHLIGHTING HOW THIS INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPERIENCE HELPED SHAPE HER AESTHETIC AND CONCEPTUAL IDENTITY. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE FEMINIST DIMENSION OF WANG SHUPING’S WORK. ALTHOUGH HER ART IS OFTEN INTERPRETED AS A FORM OF CRITICAL OR REFLECTIVE FEMINISM, IT IS NOT LIMITED TO GENDER ISSUES ALONE. HER VISUAL LANGUAGE EXTENDS TO BROADER REFLECTIONS ON THE BODY, IDENTITY, AND THE SYMBOLIC ROLE OF WOMEN IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY. THE STUDY ALSO COMPARES WESTERN FEMINISM WITH CHINESE FEMINIST ART (女权主义艺术, NǙQUÁN ZHǓYÌ YÌSHÙ), ANALYZING THEIR HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL DISTINCTIONS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FEMINIST INSPIRATIONS IN WANG’S OEUVRE. THE THESIS IS STRUCTURED IN THREE PARTS: THE FIRST PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART; THE SECOND OFFERS A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF WANG SHUPING’S ARTISTIC PRODUCTION; AND THE THIRD PRESENTS A THEORETICAL REFLECTION ON AESTHETICS, FEMINISM, AND IDENTITY. THE WORK IS SUPPLEMENTED BY AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST, A GLOSSARY OF CHINESE TERMS, AND A RICH ICONOGRAPHIC SECTION THAT VISUALLY SUPPORTS THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK DISCUSSED IN THE PRECEDING CHAPTERS.
