Landfill UNI EN ISO 14001 environmental management system.

Management of a municipal solid wastes landfill constitutes a complex and articulated activity, not only for technical issues but also with regard to the frequently controversial relationship with neighbouring communities. The landfill management can be supported adopting an appropriate Environmental Management System (EMS). An EMS is the component of the overall management system which includes organisational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, process and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the adopted environmental policy. The extensive audits and the continuous environmental improvement requested by the environmental management system could be an important strategic choice in order to satisfy requirements of a major verification by the residential population in the area. In this paper after a brief introduction on UNI EN ISO 14001 EMS characteristics, data on solid waste management EMS and principal aspects applied to landfills are presented. Moreover, a case study of a certified landfill, sited in Southern Italy, is discussed.
