Enhancing Luxury through Stained Glass, from Asia Minor to Italy

This study addresses the use of colored glazed windows in the interior decoration of Byzantine churches dating from the sixth to the twelfth century. In light of new evidence provided by recent excavations, I ask the question whether, or to what extent, developments in Byzantium can be associated with earlier or foreign architectural traditions. I attempt to demonstrate that there was an evolution in glassmaking techniques, and in the forms and ways glass was applied to architectural interiors
