Abstract

A new robust design methodology to control seismic performance of asymmetric structures equipped with Tuned Mass Damper is presented. The design approach aims to reduce the seismic response of the system in terms of maximum edges displacement, in particular the torsional balance between flexible and stiff edge is pursued. Proposed methodology is consistent with a reduction of the TMD control strategy sensitivity to the dynamical characteristics of the seismic excitation. The dynamic problem has been investigated in the state space representation showing that the TMD works as a closed-loop feedback control action. Synthetic indexes to estimate the seismic performance of the main system have been defined. A wide parametric numerical experimentation has been carried out to characterize the mechanical parameters minimizing the H2, H ‡ transfer function norms between such an indexes and the input seismic excitation. Linear dynamic analysis on asymmetric-plan system subject to recorded seismic inputs are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed design criteria.
