Without a doubt Siegfried represents the most significant hero of German Medieval literature. With his dynamism the king of the Niederland is the central character of what has become known as the Nibelung cycle, which was formed and transformed over the Medieval period. The following paper deals mainly with Siegfried’s vitality and his transformations at the beginning of the Modern age by considering three texts that are closely linked to one another (Das Lied vom Hürnen Seyfrid, Hans Sachs’ tragedy Der hüernen Sewfrid and the “Volksbuch” Der gehörnte Siegfried). Directly or indirectly these texts represent important milestones in the history of the transmission of the Nibelung stories. Particular attention is given to two episodes: the discovery and the abandonment of the treasure and the fight with the dragon – both of which bear witness to the extraordinary flexibility of this legendary hero in adapting to the religious, political and social changes in Germany during the 16th and 17th centuries.
