Atacticpolystyrene,oneofthemostwidelyusedchemicalproducts,wassubjectedtonovelchemicallyoxidative treatmentsabletotriggeragreatvarietyofphysicalandchemicalchangesinthepolymer’schains.Theoxidized polystyrenesamples,whenanalyzedwithFouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy(FTIR)clearlyshowedthe formationofcarbonylgroupsandhydroxylgroups,whichincreasedwiththeincreaseinthestrengthofchemically oxidativetreatments. In fungaldegradationtestsdeploying Curvularia species,thefunguscolonizedtheoxidizedsampleswithin9weeks. Colonizationwasconfirmedbymicroscopicexamination,whichshowedthatthehyphaehadadheredtoand penetratedthepolymer’sstructureinallthetreatedsamples.Suchcolonizationandadhesionbymicroorganismsarea fundamentalprerequisiteforbiodegradationofpolymers.

Abstract
