This paper discusses various problems involved in translating Plutarch’s Lives, though many of them are relevant to the whole corpus Plutarcheum. Firstly a special attention is given to linguistic and stylistic features, which closely follow the usage of Plutarch’s age, but are also the product of self-conscious choiches. Then a few passages are examined in detail, so as to show that translation depends also on textual criticism no less than on interpretation, so that it should be construed as a hermeneutic and historical activity.

Abstract
This paper discusses various problems involved in translating Plutarch’s Lives, though many of them are relevant to the whole corpus Plutarcheum. Firstly a special attention is given to linguistic and stylistic features, which closely follow the usage of Plutarch’s age, but are also the product of self-conscious choiches. Then a few passages are examined in detail, so as to show that translation depends also on textual criticism no less than on interpretation, so that it should be construed as a hermeneutic and historical activity.File in questo prodotto:
