The aim of this study is to assess the causes of the Shadow Economy (SE) in Latin American countries. By including in panel regressions indicators of institutional setting, human development, tax variables, income inequality and unemployment rate, we find empirical evidence to state that the institutional background is the key issue to explain the size of SE in these countries. We observe that the correlation between SE and human development index follows an inverted U curve. Policy suggestions are provided

Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the causes of the Shadow Economy (SE) in Latin American countries. By including in panel regressions indicators of institutional setting, human development, tax variables, income inequality and unemployment rate, we find empirical evidence to state that the institutional background is the key issue to explain the size of SE in these countries. We observe that the correlation between SE and human development index follows an inverted U curve. Policy suggestions are providedFile in questo prodotto:
