Abstract This paper discusses almost compactness in fuzzy topology and we introduce near compactness for fuzzy topological spaces. We give some characterizations of almost compactness in terms of regular open or regular closed fuzzy sets. We show that the weakly continuous image of a compact fuzzy topological space is almost compact and that the fuzzy strongly continuous image of an almost compact fuzzy topological space is compact. Moreover, nearly compact fuzzy topological spaces are defined and we characterize near compactness. We show that the almost continuous and almost open image of a nearly compact space is nearly compact.
