The compn. of the sterol mixt. from 4 ascidians, Halocynthia papillosa, Microcosmus sulcatus, M. savignyi, and Styela plicata, collected in the bay of Naples, was investigated. Single sterols were identified by mass spectrometric and NMR analyses. The mixt. contained coprostanols (5β-stanols) in addn. to regular (4-demethyl) sterols. Styela plicata Also contained, in relatively large amts., dinosterol, a typical dinoflagellate sterol.
