Twenty-four saponins and saponin-like compds., isolated from starfish and brittle stars, were tested in 4 in vitro tests in bacterial and cell tissue cultures. In an antibacterial agar diffusion test, the gram-pos. Staphylococcus aureus was affected by the polyhydroxylated steroidal glycosides, polyhydroxylated sterols, and disulfated sterols. However, none of the 21 compds. tested was active against the gram-neg. Escherichia coli. In a cytotoxicity test all 21 compds. influenced bovine fetal cells at 100 μg/mL, while the cells were unaffected at 1 μg/mL. In an antitumor test, 16 compds. were tested on 2 lymphoma cell lines. Inhibition of cell growth, at 5 ng/mL, was seen for 3 polyhydroxylated sterols in 1 cell line. Weak activity was seen in an antiviral test at 10 μg/mL.
