The free sterol mixt. of E. sepositus contained >25 components, most of which were identified by spectral anal. of partially and fully purified fractions. Δ7-Sterols predominated, with lesser amts. of Δ5- and ring-satd. sterols. Asterosterol, amuresterol, and 5α-cholesta-7,22-dien-3β-ol were also detected in significant amts., probably being biogenetic precursors of the minor 22,23-epoxysapogenins also present. The structures of 2 new C-30 compds., (24E)- and (24Z)-24-propyl-5α-cholest-24(28)-en-3β-ol, were detd. by spectral and physicochem. anal.
