This study was carried out to analyze the percentage composition of the anaerobic microflora associated with periodontal abscess. Bacterial samples have been collected from the apical part of five periodontal pockets of patients presenting clinical and radiographical signs of advanced adult perioodontitis complicated by purulent periodontal inflammation. Subgingival flora composition, detected by strict anaerobic microbiological procedure based on use of selective and non-selective media, showed that these are mixed infections in which predominates anaerobic species of cocci and bacilli representing 25% and 34% of the cultivable microflora. These data are useful not only for the comprehension of etiopathogenesis but also for the treatment of periodontal abscesses, mainly, in dental practice, regarding the choice of suitable antibiotic therapy when needed.
